What you need to find is the null space of a. Octave provides a function to do exactly that: NullSpace = null(a) Now, any x that can be expressed as a linear combination of the columns of NullSpace is a solution to a x = 0 If NullSpace is an empty matrix, then this implies that the only solution is x=0.
