Sorry if I missed the details of a bug report somewhere, but does
gnuplot work for you outside of Octave?  If not, then that's the place
to start.  If it does work, just not from Octave, then it should
probably not be too hard to make it work from inside Octave.  Other
people seem to have this working, so I think there is at least some
hope that you can get it working as well.  When you discover what the
error was, then please share the details of the problem and its
solution with us so we can either improve Octave or more quickly solve
these problems if others encounter them in the future.

One not-so-small nit:  Octave is NOT "public domain software".
Clearly there is are copyright holders and it is licensed under the
terms of the GPL.

And WHY would you prefer to work with free software?  Because you
didn't have to pay money for it, or because you care about the freedom
that it provides?  If you just want a free ride, please look
elsewhere.
