I'v just found the postscript version of the manual
doc/interpreter/octave.ps
in the source distribution of octave 2.51:
ftp://ftp.octave.org/pub/octave/bleeding-edge/octave-2.1.50.tar.bz2
I guess that is what you are looking for.
