Thanks, that's much better, the only thing now is that in readpnm.m I 
get error messages about illegal characters after the header, then 
that the file is truncated and cannot be read.  Supressing these 
messages seems to work fine, except that the first pixel is missing 
and a zero added to the end to pad the file out.
