library linkers

I am trying to compile a program that contains the fstream.h library.  the 
errors i get all refer to functions within the fstream library so I am 
assuming it can't find the library. what command line arguments do I need to 
get this thing to work?

I am on a UNIX system.  if you have any advice, i would appreciate it and also 
if you know where you can find these commands in a list on the web or 
something, that would be useful too.
