That fixed most of it.  I had to also update texinfo to v. 4.0

Assuming you using gcc, set CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH and C_INCLUDE_PATH
(might not need this second one, but you can't be two careful) to the
path above. Set LIBRARY_PATH to wherever the kpathsea library
is. remove the cache file and rerun configure.

This is a problem in the ./configure script that has been there for
several releases.
