weird key bindings...

I've checked my .emacs.el definitions, the contents of .emacs.d, etc. I've 
started Emacs.app with -q and I'm not finding what produces the following 
behavior:

When I'm in org-mode, most of the bindings involving Meta (esc on my Mac) do 
not produce the expected results. For ex. M-left should do org-do-promote but 
what it does is forward-word, although I *am* in org-mode.

What am I missing ?
