No, it uses ghostscript instead to turn the pages into PNG images.
The images are "back boxes" in the sense that DocView has no idea which
parts are text and which aren't. The best it can do is to provide
a sort of search which may be able to tell you which page has the string
you're looking for, without being able to tell you where in that page
it's going to appear.
