Doc-view error/problem

Hi
I am using Emacs v22.1 mainly & have doc-view.el to view pdf but it is not
working/displaying pdf!
I looked at Doc-View website http://www.tsdh.de/cgi-bin/wiki.pl/doc-view.el
where it suggests using Emacs v23 so I tried that-only to get another error:

In 'Messages' buffer I have:
No PNG support available or some conversion utility for pdf files is
missing.  Type C-c C-c to switch to fundamental-mode, C-c C-t to show the
doc as text in a separate buffer  or k to kill this buffer.

If I do use C-c C-t I get an unusable text output.
When I first added doc-view to my Emacsv22 it did work but that was a while
ago & now it doesn't work in v22 or v23! I will keep trying to sort this out
and I am grateful for any helpful suggestions. I look forward to helpful
replies, thanks
