When you're in GNU Emacs 23 or 22.3 than position the text cursor on
such a red character and type C-u C-x =. In the *Help* buffer you'll
a description of this character's face and also a hyper-link to
change its customisation. In earlier versions type M-x describe-face
RET and follow the hyper-link.
You'll see that the name for this coloured face is also used in other
fields...
After you've applied the change don't forget to save it for the next
sessions! If you like.
