how let emacs-22.3 recognize true-type font?

Hi,

I referred to http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki/XftGnuEmacs in
order to compile so that emacs 22.3 recognize true-type font.

I did,

./configure --enable-font-backend --with-xft --with-x-toolkit=gtk --
with-pkg-config=/usr/lib/pkgconfig && make all && sudo make install

and I did that

emacs --font "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-10"

but, emacs saying "No fonts match `Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-10'". Of
course, I have the bitstream font.

how can I let emacs 22.3 to recognize true-type font?

When I do

(set-default-font "-dejavu-dejavu sans mono-medium-r-normal--12-0-0-0-
c-0-iso8859-1")

Then, it recognizes, but I want to use

emacs --font "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-10"

method since some other true-type font like Droid Sans Mono is not
shown in xlsfonts.
