Currently the bdf code is not being compiled on Windows, because it is
not yet updated to use the new font backend. According to a comment in
font.h:
/* FONT-TYPE is a symbol indicating a font backend; currently `x',
`xft', `ftx' are available on X and gdi on Windows.
For Windows, `bdf' and `uniscribe' backends are in progress.
For Mac OS X, we need `atm'. */
though the comment is a bit stale, as the uniscribe backend is already working.
