Indeed, without the fancy diary display it won't work.

    CpC>    %%(diary-phases-of-moon)

    CpC> is what you have in your diary file? The format is wrong, it should
    CpC> be:

    CpC>    &%%(diary-phases-of-moon)

Wrong--both forms are okay; the `&' means the entry will be non-marking in the
calendar window.
