Maybe it does exactly what Matt suggested ;-)

Even if you're stuck with Emacs 21, you can still use the kill-whole-line function from Emacs 22. It's in the file "simple.el" - you can just paste that function into your .emacs and it'll work fine (at least, it did for me).
