If you press in *scratch* buffer C-q C-right or C-q C-left you can see whether these keys produce anything. If they do you can use and bind them. If they don't you need to teach gnome-terminal these keys (could be it's like in Xterm which you can teach a lot of key codes). Without a gnome-terminal generating a specific sequence of bytes you won't be able to determine that any of these key combinations was pressed.
