It would be easy to (defvar diary-entry-abbreviate t) and replace the
ABBREVIATE argument with diary-entry-abbreviate. Then users like
yourself could just (setq diary-entry-abbreviate nil).

Indeed. Try frobbing american-date-diary-pattern.
