I am just using emacs 21, and I see almost all the symbols, save in
the last line which starts with hello world, I see 2 empty boxes..

Continuation of a font problem ...

The first box hides a mathematical symbol, N-ARY SUMMATION, at U+2211, the second box hides a GREEK SMALL LETTER ALPHA at U+03B1. Switch through all your fonts and see whether there is one which contains these glyphs too. I am using -b&h-lucida sans typewriter-medium-r-normal in iso10646-1 encoding. There is too an X font displayer, xfd.
