Select all the lines that you want to insert the string into with a
region. Then run the command string-rectangle (type C-x r t) which will
replace rectangle contents with STRING on each line. If the rectangle
is 0 characters wide (the region starts in the same column that it ends
in) the string is inserted into the buffer on all lines that the region
covers.

As far as I know m-i inserts a tab character, unless you are in some
mode that you did not mention. So I don't really understand what your
question is.
