for flex version 2.5.4 (a-r5) the stuff in parathesis are added by gentoo
distribution folks, the configure script doesn't seem to respect setting the
environment variable AR. The others, e.g. CC, RANLIB, etc., seem fine. This is
on an x86 linux 2.4.28.
