[Heartlogic-dev] CSS Virtual Colloquium Series - Art Markman (fwd)

From: William L. Jarrold

This talk is quite likely relevant to OHL. Other talks like
it have been archived so there is at least a decent chance that
if you can't make the time below you can at least view it after
the fact.

      Virtual Colloquium Series
      05/04/2005

      Dear William,

There is still time to register for Art Markman's seminar ?The Dynamics
of Preference
and Concern?. This is the fourth talk in the 2004-2005 virtual colloquium
series
hosted by the Cognitive Science Society. The series is presented live via
the
      Internet. Register now to attend.

      Time: Friday, April 8, 2005
      1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET

Topic: The Dynamics of Preference and Concern

Cognitive Science research on decision making has often focused on
the
kinds of information people process while making choices, with less
emphasis on what people actually choose. Understanding people's
choice
behavior requires an exploration of the influence of people's
active goals
on their preferences for desirable items and their degree of
concern with
undesirable items. The examination of goals is further complicated,
because people are often unaware of the particular goals that are
driving
their behavior. In this talk, I sketch a model of the goal system
that
provides the basis for a series of studies that examine the
influence of
goal activation on preference and concern. This work also
demonstrates how
patterns of preferences can be used to map the cognitive structure
of
            goals.

Further information about this talk, the colloquium series, a schedule of
future
talks, and an archive of previous talks are available at
      http://www.cognitivesciencesociety.org/colloquium.

Please forward this invitation to colleagues who would benefit from this
seminar or
      the series.

      Sincerely,
      Tom Ward
