I made some progress, and maybe this helps to find a solution:

The fatal error I encountered was a result of not having activated the PAE mode in the virtual machine's settings. But doing so resulted in a Kernel panic when booting again, so that didn't take me much further.

I then tried to run the virual machine on my old notebook (32bit Windows 7 SP1) - which worked! The problem is that I can't take that old notebook with me, I need GNU Health on my 64 bit Windows 8.1 machine.

Any ideas?

 A cost effective solution would be to download Oracle VirtualBox from https://www.virtualbox.org/   and install  (it is an open source software) on your PC. You will then create an OpenSuse Virtual machine and install GNU Health using the Live CD. OpenSuse and GNU Health will be installed automatically. It works very well.
