Oops, my mistake: there is. See the Graphics2 API, available in 1.3 and 1.4.
However, it's PAINFULLY slow.

It antialiases the *text*? I thought it only does antialiasing for the font primitives.

In any case, it's not Free, so I'd prefer the OpenGL option (well, and besides I need to start with GL anyway...). Is there an apt line somewhere which installs all the dependencies for gzzgl?
