“make” crashed when I ran this on the netbook.  It ran out of memory
when compiling python.scm, as it always does.

I cannot discern if this is an improvement, because the result is
ultimately the same on my hardware; but since Mark uses this
successfully on a Yeeloong with 1GB RAM, I have no objections to pushing
this to master.
