Actually, it works as well with 1.8:

guile> (string #\nul)
$1 = "\x00"

The "string contains #\nul character" message comes from
`scm_to_locale_stringn ()', which converts a string to a C `char *'.
It would be good to investigate how Guile-WWW reaches that code,
probably when calling some POSIX wrapper.
