compiling guile 1.6.4 on OS X 1.2.6

I'm getting some rather strange error messages when attempting to 
compile v1.6.4 of guile.  Here are the relevant lines:

mv version.h.tmp version.h

alist.c:63: illegal method selector, found `0x174L'
alist.c:63: illegal external declaration, found `else'
alist.c:63: illegal external declaration, missing `;' after `SCM'

(many, many pages of errors deleted...)

Any thoughts as to what might be causing this?  Is this a well-known 
problem?
