the jump from .8 to .81 is lexicographically motivated as well as
indicative of "getting closer" (see TODO). tarball in both dirs:

  http://www.glug.org/tmp/2002-09/

this release should hopefully clear up all the configuration related
weirdnesses and let me get back to other weirdnesses. new NEWS excerpt
follows, including revised readline configuration handling. btw,
instead of the AC_PREREQ kludge, i found a better way for modernizing
libltdl/configure.in:

  rm -rf libltdl
  libtoolize --force --copy --automake --ltdl
  ( cd libltdl && autoupdate && autoconf )

i was also able to remove the recursion into libltdl (later on in the
autogen.sh script) w/o incident; the tools DTRT on their own at both
configure- and make-time. lastly, acinclude.m4 has the previously
posted AC_ARG_ENABLE and AC_ARG_WITH abstractions (see configure.in for
usage).

ok, back to libdfa...

* Additional subcommands for guile-config (plus bugfix)

The program guile-config now can also retrieve config.status and
libguile/scmconfig.h information captured during the Guile build.
Briefly, the usages are:

   guile-config link
   guile-config compile
   guile-config info [VAR]
   guile-config scmconfig SYMBOL
   guile-config acsubst VAR

Invoke with no arguments for details. Also, "guile-config link"
now includes "-lltdl", which was omitted previously.

* Configuration bugfix: coop-threads and readline

Cooperative threading support used to be enabled with the configure
option `--with-threads'. This was an incorrect use of "--with-FOO",
which is reserved for specifying external packages.

You can now use `--enable-coop-threads' for this. A bug was also fixed
where `--with-threads=no' did not honor the request for excluding coop
threads support. The equivalent now is to omit `--enable-coop-threads'
or alternatively use option `--disable-coop-threads'.

By the same reasoning, you can now disable readline support (enabled by
default) with the configure option `--without-readline'. Note that we
use "without" because readline is indeed an external package.

When these features are disabled, "make check" displays "SKIP" for
test files that rely on them. Also, `(use-modules (ice-9 FEATURE))'
results in the error: "no code for module (ice-9 FEATURE)".
