Or perhaps (at least wrt to my input) poorly timed -- I've seen the
(very long) character set discussion come up more than once, and
though I'm no expert, I'd be more than happy to try and work out a
good solution, but I'm not personally likely to do it before 1.6.1 is
released.  If others want to work on this right now, and can still
deal with the release critical issues then as far as I'm concerned,
that's fine.
