   I found two workarounds that involve hacking the libtool script.  
   Both get libtool to link libguile into libguilereadline as
   "/usr/guile-1.5.6/lib/libguile.so" instead of "-lguile". Even though
   -L/usr/lib remains on the gcc command line, this does the right thing.

earlier i wondered about using bash or gzip as guile vector.  but now i
think the best (and most obvious) would be to wrap libbfd and become the
system linker.

probably this would make it easier to service these linker
configuration bugs, while flushing out all sorts of guile bugs.

this approach also promises more control over shared runtime env.
