I suggest a regression search. The following combination is
widely tested and known to work:

- GRUB 1.98+20100804-14
- kfreebsd /boot/kfreebsd-8.1-1-amd64.gz
- kfreebsd_module_elf /lib/modules/8.1-1-amd64/opensolaris.ko
- kfreebsd_module_elf /lib/modules/8.1-1-amd64/zfs.ko
