This is a better version of my patch.  The ideas are all the same, but
this may be easier for grep-devel people to test/play around with and
offer feedback.  This version moves preproc spawning to just before
reading as a regular file to play more nicely with "grep -r" (I tested
only on full argv lists initially).  It also honors more coding style
conventions and the base of the patch is the current tip of git version
control (rather than grep-3.1 as before).
