I think I have a fix, and sent a not-adequately-tested patch to the
list.
The problem is that on BSD (or NetBSD at least, the macro is
_BYTE_ORDER, not __BYTE_ORDER. So the if was comparing
__BYTE_ORDER == __BIG_ENDIAN
and both were empty, so it was true.
