You misunderstand, what I was showing was this:
telnet hostname 8888
This opens a network connection to the host on port 8888 - ie it
connects to gnump3d, not telnetd.
It is just a simple way of opening a connection and typing commands
rather than submitting a page request of http://hostname:8888/ with
a browser.
