You are right, I am not sure whether running in debug mode would have 
significantly slowed down that task, however even on a fast machine with local 
database it tool a long time, and even after rebooting the machine (in case 
other processes were slowing it down) it required 25 seconds.

Can I suggest that before opening the window, a query quickly determine the 
total number of records in the table so that when the window does actually open 
(which happens quickly) the window can instead say:

        Listing < total number e.g. 1024> coded terms known to GNUmed (this may 
take a while):
