I just made a quick test and tracked it down to this declaration (in 
compute_surrounding_moyo_sizes):

  int moyo_is_adjacent[MAX_BOARD * MAX_BOARD][MAX_MOYOS + 1];

Smaller values of MAX_MOYOS are OK. Weird.
