the old way, for both gnokii and xgnokii is:
* create a file with the [global] configuration that you need and put
it in a directory other than your home, eg, create ~/rosso/.gnokiirc
* then you can execute a command line like
HOME=~/rosso xgnokii

we used to have a nicer explanation, but I can't find it
in git version there is also support for $XDG_CONFIG_HOME
