Using version:
smsd - version 1.4.4 from gnokii 0.6.29git


Can i also suggest the Git page is updated to include these installers on Debian:
apt-get install automake1.8 libtool

Can you try git version as of now? There apparently were a few things
that were not well handled and it might lead to the problem.
