Thanks, this is what I needed to know.

It turns out that on Ubuntu Hardy Heron, I needed to "modprobe
cdc_acm", and to run as root.  I'm sure neither of those things should
be necessary, but at least I believe I'll be able to get a data plan
and use my new phone as a modem the next time I leave civilization for
a place with no DSL.

I'll test it if I get a bluetooth module; there's no emergency about
that though.
