So, do I understand correctly that connection = dlr3p determines not the
physical connection type, but the protocol, which is supported over both
serial and USB cables?

Yes. To be more specific: dlr3p and dku5 mean exactly the same. dau9p,
dku2 and dku2libusb are different. serial tries to choose between
dlr3p and dau9p.

What differentiates them is the initalization phase. The FBUS
communiucation is the same for all of them.
