sorry for the very delayed reply but i forgot to mention one interesting 
 observation: we did not have a problem issuing this command using 
gnokii 0.3.5 on a trustix linux machine. when we tried using versions 4 
and above, we were already encountering problems interfacing with the 
cellphone when issuing the 'gnokii --identify' command.... and oh, i 
forgot to mention that the config was basically the same.
