I decided to try "by hand" also.
root # gnokii --writephonebook
GNOKII Version 0.5.4
Lockfile /var/lock/LCK..ttyS0 is stale. Overriding it..

I changed the gnokiirc file to use 3310 as the model.
Is my phone basically unsupported?
