in xgnokii, I use 
  calendar -> click to day -> Add meeting -> specify time and date, click Aram 
+ specify alarm date, time,
                   make entry in text field
                -> click OK -> save to phone -> read from phone

The text is empty as it is on the phone if queried directly (besides the Alarm 
time displayed is one hour before that what I specified - but it kicks off at 
time I wanted).

Using gnokii directly, I use the file
Year: 0
Year: 2003
BEGIN:VCALENDAR
VERSION:1.0
BEGIN:VEVENT
CATEGORIES:MEETING
SUMMARY:Have to leave in a few minutes !!
DTSTART:20030206t164500
DALARM:20030206t154500
END:VEVENT

and I get
