SIR/FIR and gnokii

This document[1] claims that gnokii IrDA works only with SIR ir
equipment and not with FIR. Is this still true? The IR port on my
Toshiba Portégé 3440CT seems to be FIR. As I understand it the SIR spec is
subset of FIR, thus it should theoretically be possible to get any FIR
to act as SIR and work with gnokii.
