The main gnokii binary is command-line driven. If you are into Perl, you
may be interested in Gnokii::GSM[1], a Perl module that makes Gnokii
accessible via Perl. Alternatively you may be interested in smsd, which
comes with the Gnokii sources but is not built by default. It runs as a
daemon and interfaces between your cellular phone and (at the moment)[2]
an SQL database like PostgreSQL or MySQL. You can then write a program
that interfaces with the SQL database to handle messages.

[2] I heard that work was in progress to make smsd support running
scripts to handle messages and storing to files. I don't know what the
status of these are, but know for a fact that the SQL interfacing works.
