OK -- just do

$ sudo dpkg --purge xserver-xorg-video-vesa

Now consider another thing.  In /etc/X11/xorg.conf there are
"sections".  Look for the following

   Section "Device"
   ...
           Driver      "nouveau"
   ...
   EndSection

where "..." is possibly some lines like "Option ..." and so on.

The important thing is that the "Driver" line looks like the above and
any other such line (in that section) is commented out.

Then save the file and try starting X again.
