Did you check /var/log/messages (and other log files) for more specific error messages?

My latest message in /var/log/messages dates from december although I
have /etc/rc2.d/S10rsyslog... How may I make /var/log/messages work again?

Check if there's a logging daemon running:

ps -ejf | grep -i log

See if the command "logger hello" adds something to the log.

Check permissions on /var/log/messages.

Check /etc/rsyslog.conf.
