Have you considered trying OSSv4? ALSA/PulseAudio/etc are difficult to deal 
with.

Also, some people in #gNewSense IRC on Freenode have said the microphone - even 
when you get it functional - is of poor quality.

You might try using an external microphone if you find this to be true.
