You are neglecting to factor it the person (who's time is not free)
that must. Do the accounting for the donations including tax related
stuff. The person who need to check the rate of donations vs the rate
of fees + accounting + Webadmin (to make sure the button works right..
is on the site, is up to date, etc) is in the black and not the red.
and other factors that I'm sure I've neglected to consider. Dev's want
to develop, not manage finances.

I think right now (tho I cant speak for the gNS community) what is
needed more then cash is participation. Things like packaging, testing,
hacking, contribution to the wiki, translating gNS materials so persons
in non-english countries have better access to it, etc. I'm guessing
that right now these have a bigger impact then financial donations.
Unless you were talking about a lump sum of several millions to hire
the Dev's for the project full time + the admin staff + some nice
computer infra structure. :)

I don't think that the Dev's are dismissing your idea out of hand. It
probably just isn't what is really needed at this point and Dev's want
to develop not do Admin stuff.
