I have also tried, and succeeded. You need these extra packages though:

for successful ./configure:
libgconf2-dev
libgtk2.0-dev
gdk-imlib11-dev

for successful make:
libcurl4-openssl-dev
libexif-dev
libsqlite3-dev

I've contacted the developer to see if this can be improved.
