in maths a delta is a finite increment

the letter d came from dapper from upstream
The inspiration was Mark Shuttleworth's comment about the expense in
maintaining a delta from upstream.
Looking at a distro as a complete unit it is a set of deltas from the
upstream packages.
Managing that delta is another job.
