I dunno why but the 'firefox' shell script here (ubuntu dunno
which version) doen't include $HOME/.firefox/plugins
to the MOZ_PLUGINS_PATH environmental variable.
See if that helps you making that old dir working.
(might be a backward-incompatible change  in that script)
